this image relates to school because you would normally see something like this occur in school such as at lunch time or in the hall while people are just passing by you'll get blank expressions like this usually because nobody really wants to be here but yet its required to go to school so we do good at getting jobs and succeed but i still hate school personally, but this is a replication of something that would occur in school.

environmental portrait

yesterday and today we looked at photographs by gregory heisler. heisler studied portraiture under the great arnold newman, and has taken environmental portraiture to a new level. as a commercial phottographer, heisler's work is much different that that of the fsa photographers, or later work by gordon parks.

as we begin the unit on portraiture, i'd like to know you views on this type of photography.

1] what specifically is the purpose of heisler's photographs? is it simply vanity-driven or does it perform a deeper function? i think that it performs a deeper function than what it shows, i think that its function is to show how some people are in there daily lives and what they do famous or not famous.

2] as many of heisler's photos are made for specific stories or magazine covers they have a specific look, but are they fundementally different from gordon parks' "american gothic"? yes because they show a diffrent time period usually then gordon park's american gothic his photos are much more modern and up to date so they are nothing like the american gothic.

3] pick the portrait of the actor hugh grant from the prophoto.com website and critique it for content, purpose, and effectiveness. well its purpose is to show that sometimes actors are just like everybody else, the content is that it shows that actors enjoy simple things as well and that there isnt much difference, its effectiveness is good as well.

lighting pictures

these are pictures i took during photography class. the lighting is rembrant, butterfly lighting, broad light and short light. rembrant has triangles under the eyes for lighting, butterfly is where the light is held up higher, broad light puts shadows on the left side of the face, short light puts shadows on the right side of the face.
